Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the new buzzword that comes along more and more. Contracting authorities want 'sustainable procurement'. Rijkswaterstaat, but also other customers, are therefore asking for a CO2 certificate more often. With this, we show that we are working environmentally friendly. Although the concern for the environment is obvious in our eyes, we must provide a certificate with which we actually prove that.
The whole CSR story is a reflection of what one sees in the society. We find it only normal that we carefully manage our people and our environment and to minimize fuel use. Now, however, the forces are combined. Together we have a lot more influence on it.
The most prominent we face in the future is being confronted with the CO2 certificate. This is a certification by means of the so called CO2 performance ladder. The performance ladder, with which companies demonstrate that they are working on reducing their CO2 emissions, is an increasingly important part in the contract award. The higher the score, the more immediate contract award benefits.
It is important to map out our CO2 footprint that we leave behind, in other words: how much emission do we currently have and how can we effectively reduce it. It sounds easy, but eventually it will be a due process. With the help of an external bureau, we will come to level three (out of possible five levels) before the end of the year. We have set up a project team who will achieve this goal.
First we will inventory the emissions, format reduction objectives, put together an energy management plan, support sector initiatives and communicate actively about our energy policy. A lot of work, but with the CO2 reduction we can also save costs.
The CO2 performance ladder was developed by ProRail. Companies that participated in their tenders were challenged and stimulated to know and reduce their own emissions. Meanwhile the performance ladder was taken over by a foundation and Rijkswaterstaat uses it too now.
Specifically, it means that the more we strive to reduce CO2, the more chance we have on a contract benefit. That can reach up to 10% advantage for companies that operate on level 5.
The project group consists of several employees and is managed by C.J. van de Graaf jr. Via this website, Dutch Dredging will communicate about her energy policy, reduction objectives, measures and initiatives to reduce the CO2 emissions.
Of course everyone’s help with this is needed. Not only is it important that we become more aware of our CO2 emission together, above all, there are often good ideas which are very useful and with which we can get to work. An e-mail address is opened to ask questions or share ideas about this issue: co2reductie@dutchdredging.nl.
